Disaster Preparedness


Mankind has fought disasters, whether natural or man-made, as a tool of survival. In the wake of increasing threat to life from fire, natural calamities, terrorist attacks, it has become more and more important to be prepared for any such eventualities. Here is a guideline for individual and corporate to prevent and deal with such situations.



In case of fire

Fire can be a serious threat to life and property if proper precautions are not taken at the right time. The best way to keep oneself and others safe is to follow fire fighting and escape rules whenever caught unaware by these eventualities. By being prepared you cannot only protect your life and property but also that of others.

  • Raise an alarm and inform the Fire Brigade by dialling 101
When you hear the fire alarm
  • Leave the premises by the nearest available exit.
  • Report to the officer-in-charge at the assembly point.
As a safety measure
  • You must know the escape routes, how to operate fire alarm and how to use first aid and fire fighting equipments.
  • Do not use lifts as a means of escape.
  • Do not shout or run. This leads to panic and havoc.
  • Let others know when you left and where you are going.
  • Wear protective clothing and sturdy shoes.
  • Take your Disaster Supplies Kit.
  • Shut off water, gas, and electricity.

Classification of fire

Fire is classified depending on the fuel that causes fire.                               

Types of fire Fuel

Class A (General fire)

Wood, Paper, Cloths, etc.,

Class B (Oil fire)

Flammable liquids - gasoline, oil, grease etc.,

Class C (Electrical fire)

Electrical cables and electrical motors, switchboards etc.,

Class D (Chemical fire)

Chemicals - Reactive chemicals and Active metals
