Following the success of the just-concluded Auto Expo in Delhi, which was able to garner more than 2 million visitors, the ongoing Elecrama 2010 show in Mumbai, is expecting a similar windfall. India’s revised economic growth rate of 7.3% and the recovery trends in the market has further fuelled these expectations.
The show, which is organised by IEEMA, was inaugurated here in Mumbai on Wednesday by Sushil Kumar Shinde, Minister of Power, Govt of India, amidst usual fanfare. Bernhard Jucker, Head of Power Product Division, ABB Ltd, was the guest of honour. Speaking on the occasion, Shinde said that the National Electricity Policy stipulates per capita availability of over 1000 units of electricity per year by 2012. Presently, India’s per capita consumption is about 733 units per annum. In order to achieve ‘Power for all’ by 2012, a well thought out strategy has been evolved for timely commissioning of 11th Five Year Plan projects as well as advance planning carried out for the 12th Five Year Plan.
Shinde further informed that in order to meet the growing need of the economy and the people, the Govt have planned a capacity addition of 78,700 MW during the 11th Five Year Plan which is substantially higher than the capacity added during the last three Five Year Plans. Against this, the Govt has added more than 19,000 MW and is making efforts to add another 43,000 MW in the remaining period of the 11th Plan.
While laying emphasis on the scarcity of resources including space and electricity, Shinde urged the electrical manufacturers to look at ways and means to minimise the requirement of space of switchyards, substations and transmission lines. In this context, compact distribution switchgear, SLPE cables and gas insulated switchgear are particularly important and should be taken up for indigenous manufacturing and to reduce the cost and minimise the delivery time.
The show also highlighted the role of transformers in the transmission and distribution segment. A key input in the manufacturing of transformers, Cold Rolled Grain Oriented (CRGO) steel has assumed a critical role due to supply constraints as it is mostly imported. In the past also availability of CRGO has been a major constraint. India needs to set up indigenous CRGO production to meet the huge demand of electrical industries.
Raj Eswaran, Chairman, ELECRAMA 2010, while highlighting the growth of power sector in India said that the country was going through an Energy Revolution and this was sure to have a strong rub off on global power sector. He said that the show which integrates power Generation, Transmission and Distribution, has received a good response from the exhibitors and visitors alike and there have been new entrants to the ongoing show. The show, he said, plans to focus on issues like establishment of power generating facilities and power grids among countries, power transmission modernisation development, electrical energy distribution, provision of equal opportunities and access to markets. The show will also take a closer view of the Indian economy, technology partnership opportunities and throw light on futuristic trends in supply chain, logistics and vendor capability assessment, new specifications and standards in India.
The show which is being organised over 60,000 sq meter gross area of Bombay Exhibition Centre, has more than 1000 exhibitors from over 40 countries. It has country pavilion from China, Germany, Korea, Spain, France, Taiwan, etc. and is showcasing technology and products spanning the entire voltage chain from 220 V to 1200 kV.
Murali Venkatraman, President, IEEMA said that the show will provide business opportunities for power business companies and infrastructure experts which will bring together the national and international power fraternity for discourse on technology. It will also provide a forum for the international community of buyers and investors, and those holding the belief that the future of power is here.
The five-day event from January 20-24, will also feature international technical seminars on transformers, instrument transformers, capacitors and other electrical and electronics issues. It will also highlight the achievements of the electrical companies and small scale industry.
