The India International Trade Fair 2007 (IITF-2007) on Thursday started on a positive note with overwhelming response from business delegate who came to attend the mega show at Pragati Maidan in New Delhi.
The main theme of the trade show was the Indian processed food industry, which is viewed as a US 69.4 billion dollar market. It is expected that elevating the industry to its next level will contribute immensely to the country's economy.
The main theme of the show assumes special significance as India lacks advance food processing facilities for perishable fruit and vegetables. As a result of this, India's annual wastage has touched more than Rs 33,000 crores (about 35% by value).
Many of the delegates who came to attend the show were of the opinion that Indian processed food industry had huge potential. The theme was specially planned to attract investors to invest in terms of setting up plants or import agricultural products from India. This is especially because India has a meagre 1.5% share in the global agricultural market.
The SAARC pavilion (Hall-12) had something new to offer. The kind of processed food, like pickles, jams, juices, tinned products was a major crowd puller. The home makers showed keen interest in the products. The buy-one-get-one free policy seemed to worked for the exhibitors.
Talking to an executive of Ministry of Food Processing Industries it was clear that the billion dollar industry was taken very seriously considering the present potential.
The official further informed that the industry offered direct employment to 14 million and indirect employment to 36 million people and has immense potential to boost India’s agro economy.
