JCK New Delhi receives mixed response

JCK New Delhi 2008, one of India's leading jewellery exhibitions, being organised at Pragati Maidan, New Delhi from July 5-8 has been receiving mixed response from exhibitors and visitors alike. Organised by Reed Exhibitions, the show on its third day gathered a cumulative 5000 visitors, much above the organiser's expectations. "We are targeting a total of 7000 visitors during the four-day show and till now the response have been tremendous. On third day itself we surpassed the last year's record," said Mandeep Singh, COO and Director, Reed Exhibitions. The show which is being organised in over 11,500 sq m floor area had some 210 exhibitors including 40 from overseas. Supported by the Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council, World Gold Council, Delhi Jewellers Association and host of other jewellery bodies, the show showcased gemstones, diamonds, machinery and tools, silver and CS jewellery to cater to the retailers' needs. "India's gems and jewellery business is booming like never before. During the last financial year the trade touched a neat US$ 13.5 billion and it is expected to go up to US$ 20 billion by 2010," said Mandeep. "India has made a rapid growth in the retail space; the jewellery market is undergoing an enduring revolution from a storehouse of value to a trend accessory variety store. Plain gold has now given way to diamonds, platinum and coloured gemstones," said Pietro Faralli, President of ASSICOR, the Chambers of Commerce Association, Italy in a statement. The show was a centre of attraction for exhibitors who came from Italy, Thailand and Dubai to participate in the show. Zahir of Emballage, a trading Company of Dubai said, "The response was good as we were able to meet 65% of our business target. We received about 200 visitors each day out of which 60-70 visitors were serious buyers." Zahir who is a first-timer to the show plans to participate next time also but has some suggestions for the organisers. "First, organise the logistics and infrastructure well. The experience on the first day was horrible. The AC was not working and it was very hot and humid. Such lapses should be avoided as people from other countries may not like it. Moreover, the organiser should try to rope in additional foreign exhibitors especially from Hong Kong and Thailand who are key players in the area," Vikas Agarwal of AIPL, another exhibitor who had put up his stall said that the response was lukewarm as not many visitors came to visit his stall. "Although there were visitors but the number of serious buyers were very less. The arrangements were satisfactory, but the show could not take off the way we had expected," said Agarwal. The same sentiments were echoed by Hitesh Katroidi of CVM & Co, a Gujarat-based Company, who said that the arrangements were inadequate and there were not many serious buyers. "To make sure that only serious buyers come to visit the show, the entry fee should be hiked. The present entry fee of Rs 1000 is an affordable amount for anyone, even for non-serious visitors who come only for visual delight," Hitesh said. Explaining the dilemma, Kaushal Shah, Sales Director, Reed Exhibitions said, "It's the proactive exhibitors who take the cake. We can help visitors come to the show but can't force them visit a particular stall. Exhibitors will have to react aptly to attract crowd to their stalls." The other reason cited by some exhibitors for less interest in the JCK was the upcoming IIJS show in Mumbai which is scheduled from August 7-10. "As IIJS is a bigger show attended by large number of business houses across the world, many people are busy preparing for it. Two shows within a gap of a month is not a feasible idea," said Tushar Sharma of Prism Enterprises.

The show witnessed over 7600 trade visitors out of which 5000+ were unique. Many participants like Pranda, Gitanjali, IDL etc expressed that JCK New Delhi 2008 exceeded their expectations. Most of the exhibitors have decided to return and out of them many has decided to enhance their space. The Elite Buyer Program, launched for the first time, earned lot of appreciation. Thus, there was an audience from all parts of India & we saw many international visitors. Moreover, the show covered all aspects of Jewellery viz. Diamond, Gold, Silver, Fine Jewellery, Machinary, Packaging, Software, designers etc. JCK New Delhi 2008 also got 32 buyers from Pakistan. The show has moved on and we are thankful to all who participated, visited and supported. See you in 2009.

It is our first time at JCK New Delhi as a part of the Dubai Pavilion. We are delighted to be here as we met some of the key top retailers from North India. The show has been very well organized, especially the 24- hour turnaround customer care, feedback-action-program. We had complained on day-one about the air-conditioning not working in our hall but it was well taken care of by installation of new units within 24 hours. Our lead-generation-objectives at the show have been very successful. We thank the management for putting up such a good show in India's largest retail regions.
Sanjiv Khandelwal, Managing Director, Polygon.net Pvt. Ltd.
JCK New Delhi 2008 went very well for Polygon. The show gave us the opportunity to meet many new retailers and wholesalers from the north India region who we otherwise would not have met. Given the limitation of the infrastructure at Pragati Maidan, the JCK Team did a very good job to provide the best they could. Installing an Auxiliary AC System overnight being a point in case. Mehul Choksi, Chairman, Gitanjali Gems
JCK New Delhi is a focused business-to-business exhibition with numerous opportunities of product sourcing and networking. The exhibition not only provides platforms to a wide variety of jewelry category from national and international manufacturers / wholesalers but is also very professionally managed. The response has been very good so far. And, we are expecting to do the business close to Rs 35 Crores, this year.
