India calling for NRIs

The 6th Pravasi Bharatiya Divas (PBD) – Engaging the Diaspora: the way ahead – which is organised jointly by the Ministry of Overseas Indian Affairs (MOIA) and Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), will kick off from January 7th to 9th at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

The event since its initiation in 2003 has been specially instituted to recognise the achievements and merits of the NRI/PIO in their respective sphere of profession in various countries around the world. This time again, it is expected that the event will witness more NRI/PIO individual participating from the wide spectrum of global Indians.

The theme of this year’s meet is ‘‘Engaging the Diaspora: the way ahead’’. The event is meant to give an opportunity to NRIs and PIO to interact with their Indian fellows and create a better opportunity to understand today’s India.

The overseas Indians, over the decades, have sustained a continual support to the country through investment and at the same time contributing to the economy through their sourcing of ideas and strategies. The main motive of the Ministry is to promote, nurture and sustain a mutually beneficial and constructive bond between India and its Diaspora.

Vayalar Ravi, Minister of Overseas Indian Affairs will offer a welcome reception to NRIs and PIO at Ashoka Hotel, Chanakyapuri, New Delhi on January 7. This will be followed by an Inaugural Session which will be addressed by Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh.

President of
India, Pratibha Devisingh Patil will be honouring distinguished Indians living abroad with Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awards on the last day of the three-day meet.

The event this time around will embrace Trade & Business Opportunities, Developmental Challenges of the States: Partnership Opportunities, Investment & Infrastructure, Challenges in Women Empowerment and Leadership, Culture, Knowledge Economy, Social Development Challenges in India: Health & Education, etc.

The event is expected to generate extensive participation from Corporate, Financial Institutions, Media Personals, State Government's and NGO's both from India and abroad.

The Exhibition will showcase India to overseas Indian delegates comprising the world’s largest expatriates after Chinese. Looking at the success of PBD 2007, it is expected that the event this year too will witness a huge participation.

It is expected that more than 2,000 overseas Indians from across 70 countries will be participating in the event.

The exhibition will focus on States, Technology, Financial Services, Handloom/Textiles, Handicrafts, Fashion, Consumer Goods, Real Estate, Engineering, Tourism, Education, Entertainment, Investment, etc.
